Find a Way or Make One

Before my accident, I worked at a lifeguard at the pool in town since I was 15!

That’s where I met my friend Kota. We started working there at the same time and I could tell you a million stories from the days we worked together!

 

Last summer, Lisa talked me into doing some water therapy there!!!

Kota would get in and help with my therapy. She was so good at it and seemed to know exactly what to do. She liked working with me so much, she even decided that she wanted to be a physical therapist!

 

We went twice a week and I feel like it was very beneficial for me. I can move so easily in the water and it feels so good!

 

Since the pool is indoor and heated, I thought I would be able to go all throughout the winter. But, I tried it a few times and was freezing cold the rest of the day, so I took a little break.

 

I was counting down the days until it was warm enough to go back!

 

Kota and I talked about starting in May when it would finally be warm enough. But then… Covid….. sigh??

 

I was disappointed that after overcoming fears, developing trust with those who help in the pool, and waiting all winter, that I wouldn’t get to do it anymore.

 

Now, I go to Mrs. Jan’s pool every Monday. Rainie and her daughter, Anna, have been best friends since they were kids. Jan is the nicest person in the whole world and was more than happy to let us use her pool for exercise! I miss swimming with my personal PT, Kota, but I am glad I can still get in the water.

 

It was kinda scary at first because I have to be carried down the stairs instead of just easily rolling down a ramp. I knew my sister and nurse could get me into the water, I just didn’t know if I would be alive when they got me back out!!!

 

My mom always says, ‟Find a way or make one” and this was the perfect time to take her advice. After a few times, we finally figured out the easiest and safest way to get me up and down the steps! Now, I am enjoying a summer of Monday nights in the pool!

 

I thought the Coronavirus would be over by now and things would be back to normal… But, it doesn’t seem to be going away anytime soon so we will keep having to find and make new ways! We have to keep overcoming obstacles, letting go of fears, and finding new ways of doing things we enjoy.

 

Covid is stiillll getting in the way of a lot of things but it’s not getting in the way of my progress!!! What is it changing for you?

Last year, when the panic of COVID began, I rememb Last year, when the panic of COVID began, I remember hoping we would still be able to celebrate Easter in the usual way- Sunday morning church and a big lunch with my family. As it got closer, I realized there’s no way that would be happening! Now, more than a whole year later, we are making plans for Easter!!!   I understand that some people may be concerned about getting the vaccine. But there are many reasons to get vaccinated. It will protect you and others and help end the pandemic. It will help people like me go back to normal life. Most likely, the benefits of getting vaccinated are greater than the risks.  I am sure that there are hesitations after any new vaccine is developed. I can’t promise that we won’t all turn into zombies in a few months but I say it’s worth a try 🤷🏽‍♀️  What are your thoughts about the vaccine?   #covid_19 #covidvaccine #getvaccinated #vaccinessavelives #happygoodfriday

This is how I drive my wheelchair! It has 4 contr This is how I drive my wheelchair!  It has 4 controls: Hard puff- forward, hard sip- backwards, soft puff- right, soft sip- left.  There is a button on the bottom of my straw that I push with my lip to switch between drive, recline, and bluetooth. I use the same 4 controls in each mode. In the bluetooth mode, I can even use my phone independently!  The main question people ask me is, ‟Did it take you a long time to figure it out?” The first day I got it, I ran over my OT’s toe and we were laughing so hard, I couldn’t get off. But it was actually pretty easy to learn, it just took me a while to get good at! I had filled out my paper work and was excited to go after my senior year. I had big plans!  All of us make plans for our lives. We all decide on a career, a goal or a direction. Having a plan for our life is not a bad thing, it’s just smart to be prepared for it to change directions.  It’s still hard to think about where I would be now if my accident didn’t happen. ‟Do you have any pain?” The hardware in my n ‟Do you have any pain?”  The hardware in my neck goes from the base of my skull to the C3 vertebrae, so it doesn’t allow me to turn my head. This causes the muscles in my neck to be suuuper tight and it pretty much constantly hurts.  Not so fun fact- Lots of people with spinal cord injuries have chronic nerve pain.  I have had it 3 times (right after my accident, after the shunt was placed, and during a shunt malfunction) and in my opinion— it is absolutely the worst type of pain. I am VERY grateful that muscle pain is the only type that I deal with! I have finally decided I want to be a therapist and I will start taking classes next semester!
